This is the webpage of Reindert Nijland.

Currently I am working at the UMC Utrecht, at the department of Medical Microbiology studying the interaction between biofilms of Staphylococcus aureus and the human innate immune system.

I was born the 22nd of September 1979 in Groningen, The Netherlands.
In 2002 I completed a study biology at the University of Groningen, with a specialisation in Molecular Genetics.

After that I started as a PhD-student at the Molecular Genetics group of the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, where I studied protein production and secretion in Bacillus subtilis, a very interesting Gram positive bacterium.

I defended my thesis the 2nd of April 2007.

In 2007 Jessica and I were travelling around South-east Asia for 8,5 months. A weblog of our travels can be found at DuikinAzie.punt.nl

In 2008 we moved to Newcastle upon Tyne (United Kingdom) where I worked on marine biofilms at the Dove marine laboratory. In 2010 we returned to the Netherlands, and currently live in Utrecht.

What I do most besides my job is photography, scubadiving and studying marine organisms, especially crabs, and I often combine these things. I have specialised in crabs, and I also maintain a special crabs of the Netherlands website (www.krabben.net)

A portfolio with many crab pictures and other photograpy can be found on PhotoPortfolios.net My online portfolio on PhotoPortfolios.net
